The rollout of anti-obesity medications: A data driven digitally-enabled approach

Unless radical action is taken, obesity will likely overwhelm the health system. 

Nearly 26% of adult Britons live with obesity and this number is expected to rise to 37% by 2030. Obesity is the underlying cause for hundreds of other chronic and episodic diseases and has a huge negative impact on the health of the nation and the wider economy.

There are now more pharmacological treatment options available for obesity than ever before. This means there’s an opportunity to change the delivery of obesity care and to drive investment, service reform and a healthier nation.

Following NICE recommendations the NHS has been told to roll out these pharmacotherapies to eligible patients. But there are concerns about how this can work in practice because of the cost of the medication bill and lack of capacity to prescribe and provide wraparound MDT support to patients.
